Top 5 Greatest Tennis Players in History

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

When compiling a list of the top 5 greatest tennis players, the field gets quickly crowded. It is an especially complicated task because with tennis, unlike many other professional sports, the field is not dominated by one sex or the other, really. Among both the men and the women, there are players with very unique and predominant strengths that make them easy candidates for the list.

And then there is the same consideration that you need to give when compiling any sports top 5 list – the fact that because the players are so unique, and offer such differing talents that do not always compare straightforward in a tidy apples to apples fashion, any list is open to some element of dispute, or at least argument.

And so, humbly, this list of the world’s top tennis players is offered – mixing up the sexes, not claiming to be the be-all and end-all on the subject, but claiming to at least have taken some cross-section of the most recognized and recognizable in the sport of tennis, and paying some homage to some great talents, while recognizing the fact that there could so easily be so many more who might be equally, or very nearly equally, qualified.

5 To Consider for Tennis’s Top Spots

Bjorn Borg – Some names you do not need to be a big fan of the sport to recognize. In tennis, Bjorn Borg is one of those names. Whether you follow the sport or not you have quite likely heard of Bjorn Borg, and that is in many ways telling in and of itself. He has accomplished feats and wins that today’s players struggle to touch, let alone rival, including multiple titles in both the French Open and Wimbledon.
Stefi Graf – Stefi Graf burst onto the tennis scene at a very young age, and as a result she entered a somewhat early retirement from the sport, too. Semi-retired by 27, and retired from the sport altogether by the tender age of 29, Stefi accomplished quite a lot in a fairly short amount of time. Her multiple ’slam’ wins herald her success in the sport, a success that some argue would have been even greater if the trappings of youth had not caused her some early losses that were just as likely as not brought on by a combination of youth and inexperience.
Serena Williams – Serena Williams is another, quite like Bjorn Borg, whose name tells tales of fame and tennis success. As much might also be said for her sister, Venus, although these days it seems to be Serena who dominates the duo and remains a buzz in the ears of tennis fans.
Andre Agassi – Andre Agassi was a top winner in his career, winning all four of the majors at least once in his 23-year tennis career. Of course, he was a winner off the courts, too, marrying the above-mentioned Stefi Graf.
Who gets the top, top spot? Oh there are so many. Actually, it is a bit unfair to even attempt such a short and distinguished list as this, and so we really won’t. Let’s suffice to say that without much argument at all, for this or any of these top spots you might also consider names like Chris Evert and Martina Navritilova, Roger Federer, Rod Laver, John McEnroe, Monica Seles, Anna Kournikova, Pete Sampras, and so many more. Nevertheless, we think this is a good start, feel free to offer up your own name or supporting opinion!
